  1. Bernstein, Leonard, 1918 - 1990 US composer,
  2. conductor, and pianist. His works, which
  3. established a vogue for realistic,
  4. contemporary themes, include symphonies such
  5. as The Age of Anxiety 1949; ballets such as
  6. Fancy Free 1944; scores for musicals
  7. including Wonderful Town 1953 and West Side
  8. Story 1957; and Mass 1971 in memory of
  9. President J F Kennedy.
  10. Born in Lawrence, Massachussetts, he was
  11. educated at Harvard University and the Curtis
  12. Institute of Music. From 1958 to 1970 he was
  13. musical director of the New York
  14. Philharmonic. Among his other works are
  15. Jeremiah 1944, Facsimile 1946, Candide 1956,
  16. and the Chichester Psalms 1965.
